    Another M960 mod

Started butchering and polishing another set of M960 cranks last night.

Picture shows the difference between an initial 220grit sanding and no sanding. By the time they are finished I will be up to a 1500grit and have a mirror finish.

Cutting was all down freehand with a Dremel and ba$tard file.

I have taken plenty of pictures of the whole process and will post more up and continuing progress as I do more work on them.

I'd say go ahead and cut the spider's arm all the way down to the chain ring bolt hole's barrel. It's a tad lighter, and I think it looks even cleaner.

My "OCD" likes having the 4mm amount of material left so the cut follows a smooth arc with the bolt hole.

Here's a pic of the first set I finished:

It was a long cold winter....

Polishing take a good while to do if you want a super nice finish, but the results are amazing, and last for ages. As with most things, and I'm sure Bob will attest, preparation is key.

Are there any instructions on how to modify M960 cranks for single speed? I looked around, but did not find.

    Thanks

    Spider Tabs

You can remove the material up to the barrels like BM says. Leaving this excess doesn't make them stronger. Your probably leaving 8g.

I'm taking lots of pictures and when I'm done I will try my best to put something together. It might be later in the year though but basically:

pretty easy, saw - file - sand. repeat.
It is all about the prep to get a great finish, I will spend lots of time with the 220 getting everything clean and trying to remove as many "scratches" as possible.

Non driveside: 400 Grit wet sand
    Driveside: 220Grit wet sand

Difference is not that obvious in the picture but up close it is noticeably smoother.

Also I'm losing my nails and fingerprints from the constant abrasion, it's a side effect no-one warns you about !!

Looking good! I thought about doing this myself but I just don't have the time and I refuse to put the stock cranks back on my bike. So, I am cheating and contacted Crazy8 last night. Working on getting this taken care of w/ a quickness!

    Driveside: 600 grit
    NDS: 400 grit

This is the time where the finish really starts to improve.

looks good, I paid a metal finishing shop a 100 bucks to remove the ano, polish, and clear power coat, and it was worth it. The Shimano cranks come out nice once they are polished.
