    ACS FW illness

My ACS FW is making more than just the usual knocking. Every once in a while it makes a loud PING! or CLANK! it's kind of like a very loud knock. I used to think it was the chain trying to get off the chainring and then popping back on but now I believe it is coming from inside the freewheel. Must be the set of pawls that do not catch, catching just enough to make the noise like snapping your fingers... Make sense? Anyway, does this mean my FW is about to break its pawls? Doesn't sound good at all.

I would think one of the pawls has or is about to liberate itself from its usual home, time for replacement!

    Be Careful

I had an ACS give out as I was chugging up a hill. It started with the typical "ACS knock", then a few loud pops, and finaly it gave out. Sounds very similar to what you are experiencing.

    It does hurt oIo

I squirt rock n roll extreme into the FW on a pretty regular basis and get good life out of them. Mine seem to last a year or so. The teeth wear out first usually. Same thing would happen w/ an Eno, but I wouldnt have to lube the Eno.

Maybe when I run out of ACS FWs I'll try an Eno. It will be a few years at the current rate of attrition tho.
