29" vs. 26" Gearing Question- Mtbr.com

1. ## 29" vs. 26" Gearing Question

I have a question that pertains to my recent switch from a 26" wheel single speed to my new 29" bike.

Simply put, does using the same gear ratio (in my case a 36x18) on a 26er and then using the same ratio on a 29er result in a different amount of effort required by the rider? I am going to guess that it takes more effort to move the 29er down the trail than the 26er but then again I am a mathematical dunce I really can't tell the difference between the two until the climbs

I know this has probably been brought up before but it sure seems like the climbs are a little tougher on my 29er.

2. I push 32/20 or 32/22 up climbs.. That's hard enough for me..

2-1 is a big gear on a 29" 36/20 would be similiar

4. The gear ratio is the same but you have a bigger final gear with the 29er. If you want the same gearing effort you need it look at the "gear inches".

My excel gearing calculator can help: http://www.mtbtires.com/tech/gear_calc.xls

A 36 x 20 or 32 x 18 on the 29" would be about the same gearing as 36 x 18 on the 26".
