I have a problem. I'm doing a mountain bike build project. I have two (economical) options given the parts that I have:
The first option would be to do use a 9 speed Shimano Drivetrain with a 10 speed crankset.
The second option would be to do a single speed, using a conversion kit.
It seems that if I do the first option, I would run into some compatibility issues (Shimano 10 speed Dyna System Crankset with 9 speed Alivio Shifters, 3X10 Shimano SLX front derailleur, and a 9 speed Shimano Deore rear derailleur). Please note that the only part that I haven't yet picked up is the chain.
The second option seems like the easier, less painful route to go. I've done a single speed conversion in the past that worked well, BUT at the time, I was using an 8 speed chainring up front, with a single speed chain. I'm concerned that there might be issues with the 10 speed chainring and the single speed chain. Could I just use a 10 speed chain with a single speed cog in the back? Or maybe the easy solution would be to just switch out the 10 speed chainring with and 8 speed chainring?
Any suggestions would be helpful, as I need to figure this out soon!
