Would like to eventually upgrade my stock Suntour fork to something better and lighter. How do I figure out what front shock would fit my Cannondale 29er? Are front forks universal in size?
No they are not. You would need to find one with a similar amount of travel, as well as if it is QR (quick release) or thru axle. You would also need a 29er specific fork, as a 26 fork would not work.
So you'll be looking for a fork that is specific to 29" wheels, with 100mm of travel, a 1 1/8 straight steerer tube and 9mm QR. If you go used, then you would need to measure your steerer tube to make sure its long enough. Whats your budget for a new fork?
I'd like to keep it less than $200 if possible. I only paid $900 for the bike, so I don't think it makes sense to get a $500 front shock. I would like to upgrade to an AIR shock.....
keep in mind that Cannondale head tubes are "different". Looking at the spec of the bike on Cannondale's site, it says that the stock fork has a 1.5" headtube. That gives you a lot of flexibility, however if you want to install anything OTHER than a 1.5" steerer, you will also need a new headset.
The 1.5" headtube is on the Trail SL models. The Trail 4 is spec'd with a 1.125" headtube and uses a Suntour XCR-RL with a 1.125" steerer tube.
