Anyone use a Leatt neck brace to freeride? I figure they're a good idea but I only ever see racers wearing them... Never any of the freeride guys. Any opinions on them from non-racers who are just into tricks and freeriding?
If you think you are capable of getting hurt, then take the precautions to take care of your body. Simple as that.
I happen to have a riding buddy who is recovering from a spinal cord injury as we speak. His injury is further down his spine and wouldn't have changed if he was wearing a Leatt style brace. But nonetheless, do everything possible to keep yourself out of those types of situations.
plenty of freeriders use Leatts. I personally don't like a few of the design elements of the Leatt, so my cash is going toward an Atlas Crank brace. Lighter, more flexible, and IMO safer.
I guess I'm just worried about putting myself in more danger with one on. Some of the criticisms I've read is the Leatt restricts you from turning your head. If I'm trying to 360 off a drop and my head is restricted then I'm in real trouble.
I understand for a racer, hauling ass going straight forward, I just wanted to hear some opinions of freeriders if they had any experience wearing one. I'm still on the fence, and it's a good chunk of change to waste if it doesn't work out for my type of riding.
I use one every time I'm in a bike park. Try one on and see for yourself if you are limited in your ability to turn your head. Once mine is on I never feel it or think about it. My feeling is it's better to have it on and not need it than to need it and not have it on!!
some times it also depends on the helmet you are wearing too.. my old helmet was bulkier and with the Leatt it limited movement some. new helmet, no problem..
That's what braces do, they limit movement. If they don't limit movement, they aren't doing anything.
