Hey guys I jus purchased a 2009 kona dawg frame. Only thing it came with was a van r rear shock and a manitou kingpin stance with 170mm travel for $200. Spoke with a few bike shops in the area and told me that the fork and frame was a bad combo due to stress on the frame and fork. IS THIS TRUE?
You're going to trust complete strangers here that have never seen the bike instead of "a few bike shops in the area"? Do you have any reason to believe they would give you bad information???
Um, Im not saying trust all of us idiots on the introwebz either but it has taken me years to weed out locally who is filled with solid info LBS wise and who doesnt know their heads from a55es. Even the dudes that ride DH who work in a random shop here or there I have heard give out some ridiculous info, who should know better!
Do more research, check out reviews on all the components you have questions on, see if they are close to the general purpose you intend using them for.
Dont take any ONES word for it, educate yourself from the help of MANY and make the best decision you can.
Basically what they are saying is that the Kona Dawg is a frame designed around a 5' fork, (120-130mm) and the fork you have is 170mm, so assuming that Kona designed the headtube to only handle the leverage of a 5' fork, having an almost 7" fork would POSSIBLY cause more stress than the frame is designed to take.
Not to mention since it is a dual crown fork, it also exerts force on the top of the headtube that frames designed for single crown forks MIGHT not be able to take.
However, at the end of the day, it might be, and probably will be just fine, there's really no way to tell until the frame has a catastrophic failure, you just have to ask yourself if it is worth the risk. Plus that frame would handle better with a 5" fork anywho.
Thanks a lot buggy and ronnyg. I'm a newbie @ mountain biking and this kona is a project bike which came with those shocks. I was looking @ the new Talas 160 up front and the Fox float X ctd out back. How's that sound? I am going for more trail riding then anything else.
