Any one tried to run the new 10 speed derailers on a 9 speed cassett, and shifter? FYI, SHIFTERS are indexed for 10 speed, derailers are adjusted with the limit screws and NOT indexed. Cassett bodies for both are the same width so theredically should work? Any one try this set up yet? I'm interested in running the new Saint derailer with my last years Saint 9 speed shifter.
You don't have to get snarky, especially when he's right. The new rear derailleurs have a different leverage so for the same amount of cable pull a 10 speed mech will move less than an old 9 speed one. Just like a Sram rear mech and a shimano shifter- you click the shifter and it'll move a different distance to a shimano mech with the same shifter.
sheesh...11 speeds are coming out on road bikes and I am sure Mountain bikes are next......MY QUESTION>>>>does anyone really need 9 speeds??? I mean I can see having 2 low speeds but everything else should be gears 5, 6, 7...for a total of 5 gears....
I just read an artice about ditching the front derailleur for a 1 X_?_ and having more rear gear. Mentioned was the ideal gear spread something like 13%. If they made an 11-38 cassette the current speed offerings the spread would be too much.
If I remember the cassette for SRAMs new XX1 is going to be 10-42, with propieitary hub,chain,r/d and chainring, if you are going to use it you have to buy the whole damn lot. I'm assuming Shimano will have something similar coming down the pike. I like the idea for all-mtn and xc but 9,10, and 11sp is overkill for a dedicated dh bike, my opinion anyway.
This discussion is still going on? I wasn't joking when I made the comment about math. How anyone would even think it could work is absolutely astounding. I weep for our future.
I understand the math. If you're covering 5 inches with 10 speeds, each click moves you .5 inches. Now if you cover that same distance in 9 speeds, each click moves you .55 inches, so there's always going to be that little bit of difference, and it gets worse as you move farther through the gears.
Some of us got kinda side tracked about gearing related to DH specifically.I wish there was a DH specific cassette/shifter/r/derailleur for DH. When anything new comes out it is related to AM/TR/XC and just pushed along to the DH rider, how many DH'rs need that many gears.
I know downhill is a small segment of the cycling market and it all comes down to profitability
