FWIW, the east mesa/AZT is worth a ride also. I would hate to drive an entire day only to ride Rainbow Rim. Couple it with the East Mesa/AZT. See pictures below:
And if you really get in the mood for more riding, Sublime Point Road is another good one.
Thanks, you would think the FS could have told me the road was open. I am contemplating a ride on June 4th. I have a full day drive to get there so I really need to make sure it is ridable. I am hoping someone has more information on the trail conditions.
I might ride it this weekend but I can 100% tell you that it is bone dry and conditions are just fine. There might be some blow down but maybe that has been cut out by now. The trail is on top of the Kaibab Limestone formation and the tread/soil doesn't get muddy.
I can testify that Western Spirit leads rides there. Having seen 2 cars in 2 days I took out the solar shower. 2 minutes later a bike rolls right by, then another, and ... 8 ladies, 4 guys and the Western van later, my shower was complete.
Locust Point in the trail's center is where I camp and ride 2 out and back rides. Make sure you're camera is ready, I ran out of battery there. No bathrooms or water by the trail.
Don't miss the AZ Trail/Kaibab Trail, nice at East Rim viewpoint, then go to Gooseberry Mesa.
I did about 20 miles there three years ago. I intend to attempt the whole 36 miles as an out and back this time. Thanks for the ride suggestions but my knees do not permit me to do multiple rides. The last time I did so, one of which was Rainbow Rim, I had to take two years off from riding. But I will be using better photo techniques than this.
