Ok, so I've got myself a 2nd hand bike after about 6 years of not having one, what would be the most beneficial things for me to upgrade first?
I'm currently riding mostly on roads and paths with some light off-roading but I'd like to pick it up soon and get into more serious mountain biking.
This is what's currently on there:
shifters: SRAM X7
forks: Suntour XCR
front derailleur: SRAM X-Gen
rear derailleur: SRAM SX5
brakes: Tektro IO
chainset: Truativ Iso-Flow
wheels: Alex DP17
tyres: Tiogra
I obviously don't need pro level stuff at the moment but I don't mind spending the extra getting decent parts that are gonna last. I've got about £150($250) to put towards it right now.
Is there anything wrong with the bike right now? If not, just ride it and find out what you do and don't like about the bike, and then just upgrade what you don't like or what breaks.
Are the pedals what you want? Do you have the right shoes for them?
Is the saddle in decent shape and are you comfortable in it on long rides?
Is the bar/stem combo proper for your stature and type of riding you're doing?
Decent grips?
I'd start with some of these if the answer is "no" to any of them. You have limited funds and improvement in any of these could go a long way in improving your riding experience.
Congratulation, ride it, upgrade things for fit/comfort now, replace things as they wearout, or replace things that make riding uncomfortable, buy yourself some beer.. Happy Trails
So you are in the UK thats good more for your money. So I will say wheels or fork you can get a good wheel set or a good fork for that price.
I have these wheels and they are stiff light and good price I have been using them for over 1.2 years and they have not needed truing.
The saddle is definitely being switched as it feels like I've got haemorrhoids after a few hours of riding and I'll also be getting new grips as the current ones are worn and sticky. I'm looking at the WTB Rocket V Race saddle and ODI Rogue lock-on grips as they both get high ratings on the reviews page and don't break the bank.
Apart from that everything works fine for what I'm using the bike for at the moment but obviously I'd like to get more performance out of it. Would I notice a big difference with a better set of wheels then?
