i don't know why this is confusing me but have a question regarding stems and handlebars.
i have a 2009 GF cobia that has a 105mm stem with 10d rise and then flat 15d sweep bars. i've had this bike for a couple years now and have figured out what i like in fit. the bike is a little small for me and i'd like to increase and raise the cockpit a bit.
am i right in thinking how i could go with a bar with less backsweep and that would lengthen the cockpit a bit? and to raise it i could just go with a rise-type bar, right? i know a lot of this is probably preference but don't want to do something stupid that wouldn't improve the fit.
Yes, and yes. Putting a riser bar will also allow you to rotate the bars to get a bit of adjustment also that the flat bars do not. The higher the rise, the greater the adjustment. Think a little sweep is a good thing and won't change the above mentioned.
If your wrists are comfortable on your current handlebar, with all that backsweep, why mess with a good thing? A 120mm stem with 17d angle would let you put your bars a little further and a little higher. You can always move it down in your spacer stack if it's too high.

good point about messing with a good thing. i just don't know if it also won't feel good with not as much sweep. i think i will look at a 120mm with a bigger angle like a 17d.
i know it's going to be trial and error too just to see which would be best. i'm pretty flexible with the fit but of course want it to feel as natural as possible.

Rotating riser bars away from you will lengthen the cockpit, but it also moves the sweep up. That may or may not be desirable.

True, it will change sweep some except if you get riser bars with no sweep. A stem is a good solution also but aside from fliping it over, or adding or removing spacers, if you can, there's no adjustment and kind of a guess as to a good fit.
Adding rise will also shorten the reach, but a wider bar may compensate, and a wider bar or longer stem will slow steering so ?

makes sense. i think i would prefer a wider bar and that can help too. i might just mess around with a longer stem and see what it does. then also see what a new bar might do. understanding the sweep, rise, etc helps me make a more educated decision.
19" gf cobia (it was definitely too small for me but i don't think way too small since gfs have longer top tubes).
i ended up selling it a few weeks after i started this thread since i was able to get a great deal on an el mariachi. i haven't ridden my new bike much because of a business trip but of course a bike that fits feels wonderful.
