I'm racing in the Cometh Iceman in a couple weeks. I've never raced there before and was wondering if anyone had some gear ratio advice. I've got a 29er with 2.3 tires.
You might want to check out the Michigan Mountain Bike Association forums (www.mmba.org/forum). I asked the same question last week. Not too many responses, but it looks like the course has 2,800 feet of elevation over 28 miles. There's a lot of flat gravel and rail trails, some two track and a little singletrack on the cross country ski trails.
One rider mentioned doing it 36:16 on a 29er. I'm set up 34:17 right now, and considering going 34:16 or 36:16.
I've heard tires are more important, fyi. The trail can be really sandy or icy, but from what I've heard it's packed pretty good this year.
I'll be there as well, but I'll be riding my Racer X...heck...I just bought it this year...I have to somehow justify the expense! Especially considering I may have put more actual miles on my ss...
