I know there are people running single speed Schwinn Sweetspot frames. Has anyone found a magic gear which works with them? I'm building one up for a friend, and sure wouldn't mind not having to use a tensioner.
In some cases, not all you can run an odd ratio like 32/19-17. This seems to work for some reason. 32/16 or 18's have too much slack in the chain. Just a thought.
I am looking into a FS SS but cant afford a Lenz MM right now. What should I look for in a FS design? Am I looking for a no chain growth pivot? Im not up on all the terminology. Id like to avoid a tensioner if possible id rather go 1x9.
Personally, I think the old Schwinn Sweetspot and Catamount frames make good full suspension single speeds for a couple reasons:
- Since they're a URT, the distance between bottom bracket and dropout stay the same, so you can use a eccentric hub or bottom bracket to set tension. It's always to avoid a sprung tensioner.
- They stiffen up when standing, which, in my opinion, is a good thing on a single speed, since we tend to grind up hills standing.
