If you're riding single track, I'd think you would want a helmet with good ventilation to keep you head cool and/or dry-ish. I don't know much about BMX helmets, but wouldn't think they had enough ventilation. I'd get a well ventilated MTB helmet for now, you can another helmet later if you start rinding really sick stuff.
Some MTB helmets cover more of the head than others. For example, the Giro Hex covers more of the back of the head than most.
You should be able to find last year's model on sale for under $80, I think I got mine for around $60
