hello i am building up an ellsworth specialist for dirt jumping/ street/ trials/ 4x and am having trouble deciding between the MRP bones combo or the holfellers with the MRP world cup guide. So basically it comes down to the cranks. The bones will be cheaper but the holfellers will be lighter. My question is really how much lighter will the holfellers be and will it be worth it to spend the xtra $
Bones would probably be stiffer i think, not sure though..... depending on if weight is a big issue holzfellers might be worth spending th emoney or not, cant go wrong either way.
mtbcarebear: the holtzfellers will definitely be lighter, but the bones will be 2x as strong. (maybe not 2x, but stronger.)
original poster: for your situation I would get the holtzfellers, i think the bones are meant for heavy duty freeride or dh. sounds like you want/need a lighter rig. the holtzfellers will work great for your situation.
OK, I'm going to go against the grain! Haha. I run a bones system and love them. I do everything. Seriously. Not just freeride and stuff. If you've ever held bones cranks you will realize that they are some of the lightest cromo cranks out there, and I have had no problems w/ stiffness. So, I would recomend the bones to anyone. Really cheap too for what you get.
My vote goes for the Bones.
The BONES are IMO the most simple, unbreakable crankset out there.
Also, most importantly, the Bones combo comes with everything...(except a 38T chain ring)
Been pounding on mine for 2 years now...very pleased.
stiff and really light for what they are. I haven't had the success with the RD bb's that Tony and some of the gents have so I went with a 4 bearing TV bb instead and have been happy as a clam (not that they are really that happy or that anyone would really know if they were or weren't - or even care for that matter, but I diverge...) Anyway, I've loved mine so far and if I ditched them it would only be for something like Profiles...
Bones are awesome. But, since you are looking for a 4X crank as well, they may be too short to really rip a good gate (if the gate is flattish). I run Bone cranks on my bike and love them, but would prefer a 180 or at least a175 for more leverage.
Stiff doesn't even begin to describe the bones and the BB is pretty bombproof as well.
