I ride a six to ten mile loop on a hardtail GIant basically XC in the west side of the White Tanks so I get climbs, a little downhill and sand washes. The stock saddle is ok comfort wise and lasted for about two months, or until the first hard washout in a sand wash. Like everyone I'm looking for a reasonably priced saddle that will will hold up.
I'm ok with a little heavier saddle since I already carry 10 to 15 lbs of gear (camera, tubes, climbing gear etc.). Here's the kicker I'm about 230 lbs, so...:yikes:
Define reasonable? WTB has some nice saddles, but you really need one that fits your sit bones. I'm 210 and find the WTB Rocket to be the most comfortable saddle I ever ridden. It'll run you between 80 and 100 bucks. But consider that cost over a 3 year life span, plus the fact you'll be sitting on the saddle for anywhere between 1 to 6 hours, you should spend the cash and get a quality seat.
The Specialized BG2 for $40 is great, fits my wide ass just fine. Better than the WTB seat I had before.
I have a Brooks B17 on my road/commuter bike and while it's a little expensive and ugly to some, it's so damn comfortable that I might put it on my MTB just to try it sometime. It's heavy though.
If I may jump in on this thread for a minute; does anyone run an I-beam saddle? Specifically a SDG I-Fly? All of my previous saddles have been the railed variety and I have just picked up the aforementioned saddle. I have used other SDG's previously, most notably the Bel-Air (fit me well), so I took a chance and ordered online using my preferred saddle width for SDG. (the I-Fly fits my IT's fine)
I have only rode it to the local taco shop (no trails open), but boy is it firm and rigid (note** I've just removed the fairly padded Bonty Race-Lux [more so than my previous SDG]) , so I may just be accustomed to the cush.
I know it still may be too early to tell - and I did not have my bike shorts on...but did I make make a $70 mistake!!?? I know saddle selection is very subjective and the only 'true' answer is to just get out and ride it, but I'm curious as to what y'all think.
Anyone go to a rigid and minimally padded saddle and regret it?
Yeah, I had a chance to ride an I-beam saddle on a demo bike last year. Crazy-stiff. I kind of liked the feel, very racy, but it also made me realize just how much cushy give there is in a standard rails-style saddle. I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone who wasn't racing.
WTB Laser V, 255 grams for $40, very squishy for long rides. The first time you ride one of these, you feel like you are sitting "in" it rather than "on" it.
