I have nicked the Deity bar off my hardtail to build up my Wildcard but I need to buy a new bar so it can go back to the hardtail. With a 65mm easton vice with 10 degree rise the Deity feels perfect on the hardtail for jumping as it does on the Wildcard, 10-12mm of spacers, but one of my main goals in building up the Wildcard is a combination of mini dh and freeride. My cornering as it is a weak point and needs loads of work as I have been mainly working on my jumps and drops. I will be fitting a Thomson 70mm stem which has 0 degree rise and I need to decide on a mid rise or high rise bar to match. I have noticed alot of DH rigs are fitted with low to mid rise bars and I was curious to know why etc. I am a little concerned that a 0 degree rise on the stem and a mid rise bar will be well low and I wood like to keep the spacers to no more than 15-20mm.
Appreciate any tips.
Yeah, get a 50mm stem. That's what's on my DH and FR bikes and I'm 6'2". I run a 70mm on my XC bike! As for bar height a lot of the DH bikes you're looking at have 8" forks. What are you gonna run? Bar height is personal preference so it's hard to make a suggestion but I like to go as low as I can without it feeling sketchy on the super steep stuff. I run low rise bars and no spacers on all my bikes (large frames with tall head tubes). You definitely want to run as few spacers as possible so get the height you want out of the stem and bar rise. Long steerer tubes look awkward.
I am 6'1" on a medium wildcard. I just have enough space to pedal with the 65mm stem but its small enough to jump really well and is rediculous on the trails. I clocked a 20km ride with a huge fire road climb to see how the bike felt and the stem length was good. I figured 70mm wood be a touch more comfortable but still handle all other requirements. I feel I need to start clocking some milage this year and one of the bikes wood have to cover that role. Currently I have built a mini trail in the garden with a mix of things to work on from gaps to jump and pump, drops and corners and this weekend I will put in a skinny. I was planning on dedicating the hardtail to this with single speed. If the hardtail becomes the milage bike then I can fit the 70mm stem to that and look at a 50mm for the wildcard.
I am running a 160mm 36 RC2 and 5" travel setting out back. Once my 2.5 minion arrives it will be a perfect setup as the trails are vertical, tight, poppy and not seriously rocky. I just want to get all the cornering help I can but still feel good to manual and jump.
