u can use a 2.5" stroke and up....fox labels their springs with the maximum spring compression at shock bind...so a 2.8" fox is actually a 2.75" or a 2.5" for other spring manufacturers
Check these guys out, when i get around to it, i think this is the company I might go with, i bought a spring from them for my CRF250, and it worked out great, so i would expect the same for my MTB spring:
