I know this has probably been overworked in terms of topic but i was looking to buy a shoe in the 100 $ range. Jenson has sidi bullet 2's for 109, and I m curious what size i should aim for? Do you normally go for your regular shoe size with clipless shoes? Or do you go up or down a size? I wear an 11 or 11.5 for regular shoes.
like street shoes, different shoe styles and mfrs all fit differently. Unless you know the shoe and generally how it fits, it's a gamble without trying them on somehow. Worst case scenario, see if you can find out generally how they fit, then order 2 pr for delivery and return the pair that doesn't fit.
I'm fairly certain that I've heard that bikers feet swell slightly, and runners feet shrink slightly. Personally I would go up a half a size. I wear an 11 in everyday shoes, but my Adidas Minretts are 11.5 and fit perfect after I'm warmed up.
Maybe just go to your LBS and try on shoes from the same manufacturer you want to buy from and talk to them about sizing. Then come home and order them online if its a big price difference or you LBS doesn't have what you want.
My bike shoes are 11(Specialized), so are my Adidas, my Nikes are 10, dress shoes 9.5.
I am all over the place with sizing and different brand shoes.... For the most part I start with a 13.5 or 14 and see where I am at. 14 tends to be the ticket.....and for what it is worth, 49 in Sidi shoes fit me perfect.
So much so....I have a pair of Dominator 5's under the tree as I type......
You definitely should go to a shop and try on some shoes. Hopefully, they'll have a brand on hand that you are interested in. You can see what size you are before ordering online. Hopefully your local shop will be competitive price-wise and you can buy from them. My local shop sells everything at MSRP, so they don't get much of my business. If they were competitive with the online world, I'd buy all my stuff there. But, that's a topic for another time!

I used a REI to do this and really helped. In case it helps I found Sidi and Shimano fit me about the same.
