Plastic (or whatever composite is really being used) gives you some color options that are fun. I've been going composite lately just to add a bit of color to my bikes.
FWIW, I was talking with one of the people behind Gamut-brand bashguards the other day. He told me that they design their guards to "break away" on impact, figuring to sacrifice the guard before damaging the cranks. My aluminum guards, otoh, do not look at all capable of breaking away to save the cranks.
not all bashgaurds are meant to break away tho, the E.13 stuff and most aluminum bashies are meant to take some real abuse, and I have found teh Plastics to be a little nicer IMO.
Nepernesu -> Are you looking to keep a 3-ring set-up and add a bashie outboard, or replace the 3rd ring with a bash? If you're after a 3-ring set-up plus bash, let me know....that's the type of thing I run and I'll provide some info.

If you can save a few extra dollars through the holiday season, our new Turbocharger bashguard will certainly hold up for any trailriding and AM stuff. Also, it is designed to absorb impacts rather than deflect material or break. Did I mention sub-100 grams? :thumbsup:
instead of starting another thread I'll just ask here. I'm taking off my big ring and putting a bashguard in place of it, anything I should know or adjust when I do this? Seems like a simple remove and replace deal but I know sometimes things are not as simple as they seem.
Just adjust your front derailleur limit screws so you can't accidentally try to shift onto the bash
