WOW...what a spectacular day for riding, period, no matter where you were...BUT...we were at the shed and it was great...team members came down from DE and PA to ride and brother did we ride...aprrox.24-27 miles...tons of fun, some mechanicals...Fernando had a broken chain (which he fixed), and poor Ben had a couple three flats, the last one was brutal with only approx 1/2 mile left...his tube popped out spun around and wraped up in his rear derailuer shear that off, poor guy...some of the rock gardens were a blast, very technical...good experience for all... I'll have a couple dozen photos up on my flickr account, check'em out!
Okay, here are some pictures now...on another note about the ride...did laundry last night and was going to put my bike shorts in my bike bag and you know what happened, they didn't make it in the bag, therefore....I got to ride in my "street" shorts today....yikes...ouch... took a shower this evening and whoa, tough day ahead tomoorw at work if ya know what I mean....anyways here are some pictures...lots of rocks to climb and manuver today it was great....
Man! Looks like you had a great time. Saw the pics on your flicker site as well. Awesome.
Street shorts ain't fun, is it? Ouch.
I was out at Pataspco over the weekend. New bike is quite agile. Belmont obstacle course as well as the rocky stream on Vineyard was a lot more fun with this bike.
oldnoob...glad you agree...it is definently the "deal"...not too many places have all that it does...clearing the technical sections sure is gratifying...and it gets easier each time (learning the lines helps).
Great pics! Yep the watershed is amazing! I did a 6 hour solo ride Saturday.
I started at the parking lot north of 5 forks and rode the blue trail all the way down to the Gambrill parking lot and back. I started my ride at 4p so it was dark by the time I got halfway back... I ended up riding too far north and had to ride Mink Farm Rd (to Gambrill Park Rd) back to my car.
The blue trail (especially the south to Gambrill section) rivals ANY classic rocky eastcoast singletrack out there... and it's meticulously maintained, I didn't even see so much as a small fallen branch on the trail surface all day. Huge props to all who take the time to maintain it! Almost made me feel guilty because I always like to stop and do a little branch clearing or rock resetting even when I ride places infrequently.
If you're within 2 hours of Frederick MD and haven't ridden it... you are missing out BIG TIME!
Darn not one fallen branch...thats what I love about the northern section.."water shed"...tons of branches, log climbs, rock climbs, descents..weeeehaaaawww!!!
Ed, let me know when you are heading up to Gambrill & the Watershed again. Patapsco is getting a little too easy for me ... hahaha (hope I didn't just jinxed myself in a big way here).
This weekend is out for me. Heading up to PA - see, if the flea market was this weekend, it would've worked great. Oh well.
theres a MORE group ride doing a south side tour there this sunday at 930 starting at the hamburg rd parking spot.... a little early for my blood, but i may try to make it
Did a 4 hr ride up there a couple weeks ago when I was in town - the best riding I've experienced in the DC area. I rode gambrill a bit as a kid in the early 90s and had no idea the extent of the other trails..
So many climbs and so many awesome decents! Got bit in the calf by a crazy dog while we were riding up the mtn from the parking near the reservoir - left a nice bruise and scrape but didn't break the skin. I didn't even know it was chasing us till my buddy goes "oh ****" - I turn to look and the dog's latching onto my leg. Was able to unclip and almost kick it in the muzzle when it came in for a 2nd taste.
Haha. There is one climb out there that was kind of long and we would regroup on a gravel road at the top. One day while someone was working on thier bike and we were having a snack, we heard dogs barking in the distance. We thought nothing of it until we saw 2 large mountain dogs tearing around the bend. We got on our bikes and took off down the single track. Andy ended up in the trees after slipping a pedal and getting an elbow. The next week we returned with another friend. Andy and I were on alert at the top of the climb. We heard them dogs acomin' but Skip was clueless as to the goings on and was pretty wasted from the sprint up the climb. Sure enough, they came tearing around that bend again and Andy and I were in the woods with the quickness. Skip got little more than a heal nipping and the lot of us had a big laugh once we reached safety.
Mtn dogs! That's funny - I think I would haul-a$$ if I saw some crazy mutts come down the trail..
This dog did not look like a chaser and was walking with it's owner up the road when we passed on our climb up to the ridge. The dog was off leash when we approached and the lady held it while we passed - then for some retarded reason she let go when we were 20-30 yards up the road..my buddy wanted to go back and kick her into the stream for being an idiot. I just wanted to keep going since we were so far up the hill.
In retrospect, I should've gone back and taken her info in case the rabies kicked in. The scrape from the teeth actually scabbed over a couple days ltr and I had a nice purple bruise for a week. I haven't had any foaming at the mouth yet..
I have an 8 yo Dobie and have had Rotties in the past and have never been wary of big dogs. This dog did NOT look like the type to chase or bite which is why I was so surprised! It looked like a dark colored Golden Retriever..if I had seen it chasing before it bit I would have stopped - I've never had a dog continue it's pursuit when faced head on with the chasee..(if that's a word)
Sounds like there's a Sunday ride in the works. I would be glad to ride with you all.
Heck I might even be the "guide". Lets get a head count....who's coming to shred the shed this Sunday? Need to start as early as possible.
I am game… this time I won’t go out drinking the night before! What time are we starting?
