Hi guys, I am looking to burn a few vacation days on some day tripping and am looking for some places within 1-2hrs of Towson, MD where I can spend 4-6 hrs riding. I have riden most of the trails/parks in central and north east MD and want to venture outside of my comfort rides. If you have anything in mind shoot me an email @ snowhoss@yahoo.com or post reply here. Thanks in advance

You might consider the Michaux State Forest in Pennsylvania. Mapquest says it's 1 hr 54 min :D

You could ride the ATV trails for a challenging tech ride http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/atv/adamsand.htm or hook up with a local and explore the miles of single & double track criss-crossing the mountains. I've just begun to explore this area and it's fabulous, IMO.

Also look into the Frederick, MD Watershed area if you haven't been up that way. Check the trail reviews for ideas on where to go.

i would say head to Gambrill state park and the watershed in Frederick, MD. its in the mountains, so it falls into the category of real mountain biking imo :) lots of technical trails and climbing to challenge you for sure.

1) Gambrill/Frederick Watershed - Gambrill is well marked, for the Watershed portion it's best to find a local or dig up some GPS tracks to use to find

2) Michaux - find a local or use GPS and/or go to the most recent race course that has been recently cleared - The good stuff can be hard to find up there but it is worth it (look up maps on Gettysburg Cycle)

3) Elizabeth Furnace near Front Royal, VA - you can make that drive in 2 hours and it is well worth it. Trails are well marked and you can put together big rides. Primo terrain. The PATC map or Nat. Geo. map is helpful. There's also a bike shop right up the road (Moon something, can't recall the name)

I've got a few GPS tracks for all of the above listed here. There's a lot of stuff at all of the above places that I don't have GPSed, I just don't take that gadget along very often. There's enough to get you started though.

Don't forget Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area. It's about 20 minutes southwest from Hagerstown (about the same distance from Towson as Michaux ...which is awesome too). It's 23,000 acres and has about 100 miles of trails.

I live close to it (there's a trailhead at the end of my street, I ride 20 hours per week there)... my family is in AA Co. and Baltimore Co. It takes me about 1:45 to get back to that area.

Also... I just did a 5.5 hour ride today in Cacapon State Park. It's about 6100 acres. Lots of climbing and a bunch of nice technical riding sections.
