I am currently building up a old giant dh comp frame, I am new to the downhill world and wanted advice on a good set up to get me rolling. Fork Headset Brakes Derailleurs Hubs Rims etc. Any advice would help
Its a 03, I'm not rich but will spend what i need to. I know its a older frame and yes it might be cheaper to buy a whole bike but I want to learn how to do it my self.
what are you planning on riding? DH race? Light DH/Freeride? Big drops and long gaps? Going for light weight or durability?
believe me...you will spend many sleepless nights trying to figure out what parts to get unless you have a plan on what your going to do with your bike.
heres a general run down. your gonna have to do a search for each part to get a good feel for whats best. there's LOTS of topics on best fork, brakes, wheels, cranks, etc...
fork: 180mm to 203mm travel. generally dual crown. Fox, Marzocchi, RockShox...
brakes: 185mm to 203mm rotors. Avid. hayes, Formula (theres lots of brake topics here)
wheels: stronger the better since ur just learning. Outlaws or Trans Revolutions. leave the weight until u start wanting to race.
tires: 2.2 - 2.5 width. Maxxis Minions, Kenda Nevs, Michelin DH's
cranks: strong. saints are popular.
chainguide: find out what fits. does your frame have ISCG mounts? E.13 Gamut and MRP are the standard
rear shock: what ever fits your frame. you need eye to eye length and stroke.
search is your friend here. your can learn a lot just by searching the forum.
