I have assembled an Intense Socom. I want to get the tune into a good starting point. I am a 220 lbs rider with a lot of riding experience. I did a lot of racing 8-10 years ago. Getting back into the game. I have the Fox DHX 5.0 coil shock in the rear. It has a 400 lbs ti spring. The front end has a Rock Shox Boxxer WC. I will take any advice, experience, suggestions the forum members have with this bike. I do not have much experience with new fork mechanics so a little extra detail might help. Thanks.
A 400lbs spring sounds a bit light for a 220lbs rider. Are you getting 33% sag with les than two turns of preload on the spring?
And as for shock set up. For the DHX, start all adjustments at full open. Add clicks of hi-speed compression (bottom out) until you stop bottoming out harshly on normal stuff you ride. Add clicks of low speed compression (Pro-pedal) until you start skipping around in corners too much or your rear feels choppy and harsh over washboard style bumps, then back off a click or two. Add rebound to taste; enough you don't pack the rear up on multiple hits and less than will buck you off jumps or on heavy landings.
As for the Boxxer, I hate to admit it but the gate adjustment is rather useless. Set your air pressure so your getting about 20% or so sag; you'll probably need around 130-140psi at 220lbs. Set your compression fully open and keep adding clicks until you stop bottoming it out a lot. With proper sag 3-5 clicks in on the compression should be about right, much more and the fork is going to start feeling locked out. Rebound again to taste.
Yikes, way too light of a spring. I'm ~175 and I'm running a 450# spring. Did you buy it new? If so maybe talk to the shop you bought it from. Or maybe call Intense and see if they'll swap it out for you.
I got the bike used. The bike is much different than my last DH racer from '98. I had a Foes with 6" in the rear. Bullet Brothers up front with 6" too. Bike was nice for the day but I have high expectations for this rig. I guess I will just read the numbers off the existing coil spring and go up in lbs. Do you think 450 lbs. will be enough. Kitted up I will be 235 pounds. Any one know the exact shock eye to eye numbers?
you will need at least a 550 pound spring....If you are losing weight go 550 if you plan on staying with that weight get a 600 pound spring.....I would start air around 170 pounds
I think pillete has the wrong numbers, I'm pretty sure they use an 8.75"x2.75" on the Socom. (I'm not at home to look at it myself, so maybe somebody else can jump in and verify.)
With that info and your stated weight of 235, you should get right around 33% sag with the 450# spring. If you're doing really big hits etc., you might want to move up to the 500#.
Hello again. thanks for all your help guys. I just got off the phone with Intense and the tech guy there says the spring should be at 3" stroke or even 3.25" stroke. I am going to check out the link above and see what that comes up with. Can anyone else confirm the spring stroke they have on there socom???
Mine has a 450lb spring by 3.25, and its a little soft for my 200lbs plus gear, but feels like butter without a camelback.
