Title says all.
I'm trying to translate this into Chinese. So our people can understand the sport better.
So, gimme your thoughts, your understanding, your explaination.
Thanks!
Freeride is the ability to go anywhere, or off anything.
Slopestyle is gravity assisted dirt jump/freeride where speed is not as important the size and technique involved in hitting natural or man made jumps/obstacles.
"Slopestyle" can and SHOULD be broken down like this:
Pay attention because you may learn some new words!
Slope: angled hill that you ride your bike on.
Style: how you ride your bike (Examples: side saddle, training wheels, pegs etc..)
Depending on your "Gnar Factor", you should be able to ride most slopes with some style, but not ride stylish on all slopes.
Any slope greater then 45 degrees and you should consider tweaking your style to shred more in a direct route aligned with ONE of the top five competing pros.
Only when you have ripped down a slope wearing a pink polo shirt (with a popped up colar) a white puka shell necklace, and your local college sports hat (tilted up and slightly to the right) have you master being a "Girra" and are ready for the MTBR forums!

I define slopestyle as mountain biking on a series or course of dirt jumps, drops, wallrides and other man-made features in a defined area. Sort of like a dirt skatepark for mountain bikes.
This post up's SMT's uselfull/not usefull post ratio in my book. Just watch a major snow event with slopestyle. The features are similar, except for snow its metal rails and UHMW covered box's, or school bus's, or W/E. The Snow and MTB variety are so similar they should have the same name - Oh wait, they do. They even have the same steeze-alicious attitude goin on. It's really related moreso to Snow Slopestyle on skis/boards than it is BMX, except for the fact that they both have wheels. I think its good for the sport cause its finally like something the sport of MTB can be cool at and progress in our own direciton instead of always following in the "cool" footsteps of BMX. The only draw back is we get all the same poseurs and gay "steezy" attire, along with cocky punks that you also get in snow slopestyle...
Why do the chinese care what slopestyle even is...they just make the bikes, they don't need to know what they are used for....in fact shouldn't they be welding some frames right about now....GET TO WORK!!!!!!
Slopestyle was invented originally as an event to sell Kokanee beer, they would have bikers there poppin' wheelies and riding no handed, 27 years later, we have crankworx.
Slopestyle is a form of freestyle snowboarding and skiing competition. Slopestyle is also emerging as a niche in the world of mountainbiking with new competitions emerging that seek ways to judge the new breed of freeriders. In slopestyle, the rider or skier is free to choose his or her own route through a course consisting of various terrain features, such as bumps, rails, and jumps. Judges determine the winner based on the degree of difficulty and execution of each trick. While slopestyle is one of the most popular events at the Winter X Games, it has never been in the Winter Olympics. A few notable slopestyle athletes are Shaun White, Janna Meyen, Tara Dakides, Danny Kass, Travis Rice, Eddie Wall, Chad Otterstrom,Simon Dumont, Tanner Hall, Jon Olsson, Andreas Wiig. Unlike the Superpipe event, slopestyle is more weather dependent. In the 2006 Winter X Games, the men's ski slopestyle event was changed into a Big Air event due to poor conditions.
I think the key here is that the obstacles or terrain are man made or altered. the focus is on tricks or maneuvers, you don't get points for being the first down the mountain, you get points for the style with which you do it.
