I have a Gary Fisher Mullet, it's a 27 speed . I dont like how it rattles and snaps everytime I drop off stuff and DJ so I would like to go to a 9 speed bike. Single in the front and 9 in the back, first question, Will this work? or do I need less than 9 in the back?
second, What do I need to get? Cheap cheap if possible...
something like this. I want to be able still have some gears but also have some tension on that chain so it doesn't snap every time I drop off something...also the protection from smashing the rings and chain on steps etc...
well SS is the best way to go. but if you want gears, you'll need a 8 or 9 speed casette, cables, a shifter 8 or 9 speed, and a RD 8 or 9 speed. also make sure your rear hub is shimano/sram 8-9 speed compatable. the chainguide will work if you have ISCG or whatever mounts on your frame, otherwise you can get an adapter that fits into your BB that allows you to run a chainguide.
I would go 9 speed. you already have the shifter and cables, not to mention the RD. what crankset do you have? you'll need shorter bolts to get rid of the 3rd ring and just bolt the second ring onto your crank arm. you can remove the 22 tooth small ring with no problem. I would suggest a 32 or 36 tooth sprocket up front. you probably already have a 32 tooth on there.
So all you need to do, is get some shorter chainring bolts and take off the 3rd ring, and replace those bolts with the shorter bolts. you can take off the 22 tooth as well as you wont need it. use all the 9 speed parts on your bike that you have already, cassette, RD, shifter and cables. remove the shifter and FD for the front drivetrain, but keep those parts, you might want a 18 speed later {you never know} you could probably also shorten your chain a little, so its a little tighter on the RD and a little less likely to flop around.
thank you for that , great great answers. Thats exactly what I needed... I will have to post up some pics before and after it might be some time before I do the mod like a week or so but thanks again...
peace
My chain ring doesn't seem to have any bolts. its one piece????
I think I have Bontrager Earl 4232 22 Tooth chainring
so Do I need to buy a different ring?
sadly you'll need a new crankset. and that the one on your bike isn't a bontrager earl. But good news it looks like on your frame, you have some sort of mounts for a chainguide. Look for Hussefelts on craigslist, the classifieds. they can be had for cheap and are very strong. or you can go to your local bike shop where you bought your GF and see if they have the bontrager earl or big earl cranks. I've heard from some that the bontrager stuff isn't half bad.
The rings on your current crankset aren't removable. which is a real bummer
just use what you have,...not worth buying new crankset....try to keep it in the middle or big chainring and the middle gears on the sprocket....better to keep the chain in place
