Well as it happens, Err put ans SDG on my Nicolai, am very happy thus far, the adjustment is great, the SDG seat is light as, but comfy..... If you are building a DR/DH rig, I would go SDG... I too have a Thomson MP, love that too though. But not on a FR/DH rig
You guys are all high or something. He asked about the masterpiece and not the Elite seatpost (which both are lighter than the SDG)
Thomson Masterpiece is going to be lighter all day over an SDG and has a lot finer tunability on seat position provided you don't need a really odd angle.
SDG does offer a wider range of motion but the detents are pre determined and not always ideal. There are fewer saddles although you should be able to get one that fits you pretty easily.

when did he ask which one was lighter? and yeah, it's 420, wouldn't doubt if some of the posters here have their happy face on.
but, I'm curious, overall, wouldn't the set-up be lighter? post/seat combo? I don't know any numbers, is an i-fly lighter than an slr/comparable light railed seat? and you really think the thomson has more adjustability? just asking... either way you get a great setup, I just like the SDG and macneil better.
My thought on the SDGs, and this is totally me being an armchair engineer, so take this with a big grain of salt, is this: It looks like the I beam down the middle of the shell would be stiff as hell, and would keep the shell from flexing as much as it would on a normal seat. I can definatly see this leading to a drop in comfort. I'd get a Thomson, just because of the options avaliable for seats. Maybe I'm just picky, but I want a seat that I really find comfortable, not just whatever SDG makes. I guess this isn't really an issue on a DH bike though, so it really depends on application. Same applies for the rest of my post too. Still, I'd take the Thomson setup for a seat that I actually have to sit on. For a race bike, I'd just get whatever is ligher, or if weight is close, whatever is cheaper.
Thomson Elite every day on every bike.
unless for xc ultralight setting,
and i would not use the M.P for F.R
Light / Srong .. the point is how light or how strong ??!!
I noticed you meant Thomson Masterpiece, I too was going to speck my FR bike with one, like you are trying to save weight. But as i mentioned, no go with a Thomson MP for FR..... They are strong, mine has been thrashed for years........
I have several thompson elites and just recently picked up an sdg ibeam setup. The thing I don't like is that the sdg setup does not drop as low as a thompson. For me this is a big deal because I am short.
I have both, and would NOT buy another I beam. It's rather uncomfortable. The I-Fly saddle has a good shape, but since it doesn't flex, it's just, uh, not good. On flat, pedally sections, if i'm not wearing a chamois, it sucks to sit down and spin. Talk about getting pounded.
Another advantage to the regular, non-I beam setup (i.e. Thomson) is that if you wreck while on a road trip, and snap the seat (I've seen many SDG saddles broken...) almost any saddle with rails will fit, where as finding an I-Beam saddle on the road is pretty tough.

I had the I-beam with the bel-air saddle. It's light and SUPER adjustable, but the I-beam up your ass does not feel good for any kind of time. If it's going to be a strictly DH rig, then you could get a away with the I-beam, but if you're going to be sitting for extended periods of time, the ass hatchet is a killer.
A sdg Ifly with padding and a sdg ibeam is as light as it gets. I have ti rail saddles and the tioga matched with a thomson and the sdg padded still runs lighter with saddle. Post by itself is Thomson, combined goes to SDG.

The Bel-air ST I-Beam is a good saddle and is a little under 200g. The Thomson Elite and Masterpiece seatposts are lighter than the SDG IBeam at the same length.
Depending on the saddle you pick though can make either a light option.
