Hey everybody, nice board here lots and lots of reading to do here
Well here´s my problem if you can call it that. I Bought a grey ano VP free XL frame a couple of days ago from a friend, its like new, not a single scratch on it. Got it for 530 USD.
And i have got a budget to build for, for approximatly 1800 USD. This is the first bike where i am building and choosing the parts myself, so there are some things im unsure about. Like brakes, what to get and size, and especially the crank, im unsure of what will fit, I was offered a MRP Bones combo 1 for 300 USD, would that fit?
Here is what i am thinking of buying so far.
Fork:
Fox 36 van RC2
Handlebars:
RaceFace Diabolus DH Riser
Stem:
Da Bomb Combat Camo
Chainguide:
e.thirteen SRS System
Chain:
SRAM PC 991 9sp Cross Step
Back wheel and tire:
(Im unsure of sizing here) Mavic XM819 Disc 2007, and a Maxxis High Roller DH tire to go with that.
Front i only need tire:
Maxxis High Roller DH
Crank:
???
Brakes:
???
Thats what i got so far, if anyone has some good advice on what to buy or not to buy please join in... BTW the 1800 USD to build for are only for parts, the frame is not in that budget...
1800 for components won't be to hard to spend...
cranks: Saint, if you can find them.
you didn't mention how you'll be riding the vp and its hard to guess... given your fork and tire choice.
say you are freeriding/DHing it and wanting to do some trail riding... i say totem coil instead of the 36 ... it'll be around the same price as the 36... if you have a little extra $$$ you've saved elsewhere get the 2 step air... that way you can slam it down to the 135mm for some trail rides.
Tires: if you're in soft dusty dirt throw a high roller in the front and front or rear minion in the rear.. rolls nice... on hard pack northwest soil.. i'd throw a front minion on the front and a high roller on the rear. These are my personal favs.. both are 2.5".
brakes: since you are on a budget, Juicy 5's should suit you just fine.
heres a link to an extended review, http://www.pinkbike.com/news/Avid-Juicy-5-review-2006.html
You can probably go with a lighter handlebar like an Easton EA70. The Diabolous is pretty heavy. Look like a really solid build, you seem to be going a little more light-use with it considering your rim and fork choice (not full blown DH at least), so you can save some weight where possible. Try to get a Saint crankset from Jenson. Looking forward to seeing some pics....
Like the others mentioned, I would go for the Saints for $149 at Jenson. You can't beat the price for a such a solid crank.
I think the Vanilla is nice, but my personal preference would be to go with a 66 since it will have more travel to balance out the 8.5 in back.
Juicy 5's can be had for about $89 a side now. Personally I like the feel of the XT's, and I got mine for about $80 a side brand new.
If you are building some new wheels, best prices I have found are from Chainreaction. They are in the UK, but offer free shipping so it's a smoking deal. I tried to get several online shops to offer, but they couldn't touch the prices. From what I've heard, they build a very good wheel as well.
Another vote on the saint cranks; big and burly. Not so sure about the long term wear of outboard bearings but with a season with them its been perfect.
I'm in the same boat (building my Free), and I have heard all kinds of sizing being thrown around in the forums & on the SC website.
Please forgive me for oversimplifying:
07 Bullit frame (NOT 1.5) with 150mm rear spacing.
So I need a 73mm x 128...correct?
Now, I was told by Jenson that the Saints on sale would not fit 150 mm spacing!
Can someone please advise if I can buy the 2 ring w bash guard Saints??
Does it come with the BB...if not...which should I get!??
Thanks for clearing all this up...It's the most confusing part by far...........

It just all clicked in my head now....you can use the 805's with a 68/73mm bb as well as an 83 but it is the rear spacing that it is made to accomodate but you can't use the 800 with an 83mm bb with...Right?
I'm a little confused, you want to run a single ring, which to me suggest mostly DH only, but you also want a 36, which to me suggests a long travel trail bike. I guess what I'm asking is what do you want to do with this bike? Everything, DH, freeride, trails. Answering this would help us alot more

Well i would have answered you a lot sooner but i have been at work all night. I dont know if all of you answering here are US citizens, and im in Denmark so the timezone is off, i've been refreshing my topic all day here before i went to work, hoping for some answers...
I want a bike which i can use for mostly for DH and freeride. This bike is not gonna be used for long travel trail.
I want the 36 cause i want a single crowned fork, and not a double. Because im worried about losing some of the agility with the double. But i am gonna add im proberly starting out with a Banshee fork, cause i can get it for 60 USD. And my Fox Vanilla fork doesnt have enough travel to go with the VP.

your geometry will be way off with that short of a fork, you should be looking at something like the rock shox totem if you're stuck on a single crown, or possible the 180mm domain becaue I think you can get it cheaper.

I was considering the totem also, but i like the fox forx, but maybe i have to live with a totem instead.... Well im going to bed now, so dont get pissed off if i dont answer the next 18 hours, cause im workin all day tomorrow... Cya

I don't think its big deal as far as the dc fork goes, it'll just be a little heavier. Any Motion Control Boxxer would be a good option. Maybe a used Fox 40 if one pops up, you can reduce the travel (internally) if you want to. If this bike will just be used for shuttles and resorts the Fox 36 makes no sense.
I like my Saint cranks but if you're lighter you could go with Hones and save 300g.
819s are too narrow, go with at wider rim.
Brakes... I like Magura, if youre a heavyweight or ride really fast check out the Gustavs, Louise FR are good too, I use a Gustav 190mm front and Louise 180mm rear. I like the feel of Maggies.
Well I can get a Fox 40 for about 1000 USD but thats also the most of my building budget, then i would have to add maybe 800 USD more... Gonna have to think about that
