While searching for something else, I just saw the results of last years Worlds in New Zealand and was surprised to NOT find any american near the top of the standings in DH?
I thought USA would do better, being a hotspot for DH and such a big country...
i think the biggest problem is all the video games plus the races out here don't give you much money to sustain a living...and our better athletes are in more mainstream sports
they are out there. we have some good young talent. unfortunately, they are at a disadvantage being here in the US. all the good riders go over seas because that is where the big talent is, without the best in the world to race against you cannot get that fast. there is also a lack of sponsorship in the US for racing. the racers aren't selling bikes, the freeride guys are (or at least that is the perception).
good US riders like houseman and warren don't get the press that freeriders get like bearclaw and the rest.
I'm no pro MTB racing expert, but I would imagine that it's also harder to really break into pro racing in the states because of the large costs of traveling a huge country like the US to get to the races.
