Mine appears dead, fresh out of the box. Got it mounted on the bike and pressed the button... Nothing. Going to get a new battery, but thought I'd ask up here just incase I'm missing something BLINDINGLY obvious. The manual seems pretty idiot proof though.
Hmmm... I bought mine at REI, so I can return it easily. What is the consensus on Garmin's customer service? Am I better off just returning it to REI or going through Garmin if a new battery doesn't do it?

Glad to hear you were able to fix it with the battery. Had that not worked, I would have said let REI handle it for you. They rock. I'm a customer for life.
I also had a brand new cadence sensor show up with dead battery. I called Garmin to see if they could send me out a battery and they told me there was nothing they could do except have me send it back to them. How lame is that? Sure, I was able to buy a battery locally for a couple of bucks but I was really dissappointed with Garmins response. The Garmin CS guy also told me that this is a common occurence but Garmin wasn't doing anything to change battery vendors. Oh well, hope my 305 works better than Garmin'sr quality control and customer service.
They offered to fix the problem but because it wasn't how you wanted it fixed their CS sucks? I'd have never called them for something like a battery anyway so I suppose we certinaly have a different point of of view. Seems somewhat unrealistic to call Garmins QC poor for a dead battery too. If the unit works with a fresh battery QC did their job. I'd certainly be upset if I was the OP and the sensor itself didn't work.
It's obviously some one here doesn't know what good CS nor good QC is. I work in CS and make a good living at it for more than a decade. The product is the complete package not just the sensor. If a company can't depend on a battery to keep its charge while in storage for at least six 6 months then that company has a quality control issue. The quality of the batteries are poor, as the examples above show. It has happened to more than just myself. As well, if you can't send a customer a 3 cent battery for a $400 plus product then that company's CS is lacking.
You're right I have obviously never been a customer before and you must know more than me since you have worked in CS and already know my background. Why dod people toss around their knowledge like it makes them an authority and that there is no way the other people int he conversatin could possibly know anything.
With what you've pointed out my fix as Garmin would be to ship it with "Batteries not included" then you couldn't point the finger at the manufacturer of the product that happens to run on the batteries for a battery defect. Offering to fix you sensor by putting a new battery in it for you is a viable option. Honestly for under $2 bothering to ***** about it just seems petty.
We keep tabs on our customer's experiences and, admittedly, have had a few problems with cadence sensor batteries. Early on, some customers were inserting the batteries with reverse polarity. I can recall two or three (of 1,600 or so Edge 305 Bundles we've sold so far) that arrived DOA with a bad cadence sensor battery. The cadence sensors themselves seem very reliable, overall. We've never had a return.
Garmin support is very good, IMHO. I've seen them replace units smashed in SUV hatchbacks and offer deep deep discounts for some that were simply lost. I've had customers with problems who have had new units overnighted to them from Garmin. Missing a part (a rare occurance)? You'll have one quickly and painlessly. In this age of sell it and forget it, Garmin seems intent on satisfying their customers and providing a good experience.
Thanks GEOMAN. I appreciate your input and have heard great reviews about your CS. I agree with you that the cadence sensor is very reliable. The one on my Nomad has been through hell and back and hasn't missed a beat.
The battery died in my cadence sensor after 1 month, had a CR1632 lying around, stuck it in there it has been working for 6 months now. Garmin doesn't make batteries and I don't hold them responsible for the battery--when it went dead I didn't even think about contacting Garmin to ask them to sent me a $2 battery and most every place wants the bad part back. I have contacted Garmin CS once and they were very nice and professional!!! Pooh-happens
