I'm going to be buying a new disc wheelset with King ISO hubs laced with either DT Revolutions (I'm light and have used Revos on disc wheels for 5+ yrs) or DT SuperComps. I haven't yet decided on rims (DT Swiss XR 4.1d, Velocity VXC or Mavic 717). For the last 5-yrs, I've been using Sun DS1-XCs and have been pretty happy with them. Any opinions (good/bad) on these 3?
FYI, I'm 135lbs and race XC (Expert). I'm looking for something reasonably light, while still durable enough to withstand enduros, 24 hr solo races and the TransRockies.

I have been using the VXCs for 2.5 years with zero issues. Very nice rims. Mine weighed 409g.
I am 170 lbs and ride everything on them (xc, trials, tech trails).
i purchased a complete wtb rear wheel about a month ago - for my enduro. it's definately light enouh for xcountry, and it's held up great for a trip to moab, another trip to western colorado, rides around home, etc. no issues whatsoever, and it's super lively too... it's a wtb branded rim, and i'd wholeheartedly recommend it!
I've never ridden the DT's. However I've built many pairs of wheels for customers and am always impressed with the quality of the rim right out of the box. The weight is usually very close to advertised, the wheel is round, true, and clean. Just a great quality rim. I've never had a complaint from any of the people I built for. Just my 2 cents.
The 317s tend to ding fairly easily. The VXC are a good deal but I've never tried them. DTs are top of the line though. I've been real pleased with mine.
On the spokes, I really thing the SuperComps are worth it over the Revolutions. Not to say you can't use the Revs but the SuperComps are stiffer, stronger and only 17g heavier.
hi Mike,
I have built 2 wheelset with DT rim this year.
one road RR with TUNE hubset and black revo at 1500 gr the set and is on my own road bike.
one MTB XR 4.1 Ceramic on XTR 960 hubset and DT comp (2-1.8) at 1800 gr.
I'm very impressed with DT rims in terms of quality, double eyelet and at 425 gr for the 4.1 ceramic it is better than the Mavic 618 ceramic that I have on my commuter at 460 gr.
on the road bike, the wheelset is alike great and lightweight, yet revolution spokes are a little to soft to obtain decent lateral rigidity but being ultra light myself at 110 pounds (49 kg...), it works ok on the road.
yet I would not probably consider revo on a MTB wheel, see around, all the wheel manufactors use less but thicker spokes. it comes to the same weight at the end but a thicker spoke allow more tension and stiffer lateral complyance.
50 gr extra per wheel (between revo and competition) would give more in ride quality than the poor wheel making with revo spoke.
if you are despairing about weight in that department, I would personnaly choose lighter tires instead.
that is my experience and view on the situation.
all the best. didier. www.greybicycle.com
I recently built up CK ISO Disc, DT Supercomp, DT XR 4.1d a few weeks ago. I am VERY happy with my choice. Just don't get blue hubs cause then we would match
Mike, I have been very happy with my VXC rims. I have been using my current set since last october and I am very pleased with the performance of rims. They are quite durable and take a good hammering despite their light weight (410g I think). I have been using the Eclipse tubeless kit and haven't had trouble with the rims in rocky terrain etc.
If you are lacing up King ISOs to the VXC rims, then take a look at using the Supercomp spokes. Your final wheel build with aluminum nipples should come in at 1630g or there about.
I believe the DT Rims are also a nice option, they cost a few dollars more and weigh a little bit more, but no doubt the quality is second to none. Mavics on the other-hand are not all that crash hot. When I was looking at getting my wheelset built up the X317s at the time were far from round and not all that crash hot performance wise.

They are all good rims and I've built dozens of wheelsets with all 3, hard to go wrong here. But, for what it's worth the one I use myself and recommend the most to customers is the DT. The stiffest, strogest, and best quality of the 3 in my experience.

The Sapim CX-Ray spokes are next on my "Must have" list. I intend to relace my King Hubs to my VXCs (or possibly) Stans Rims with those CX-Rays, all I ever hear is the best about those spokes. I am almost sorry that I hesitated to get them in the first place.
I am still very much on the fence regarding the Stans Rims......
Thanks for all the replies...I've decided on the DT rims. Now, spokes.
It seems there's an aweful lot of talk about the Sapim CX-Rays. I've never used Sapim spokes but have heard/read a lot about them....all good. So, I went to Sapim's website and noticed these spokes are bladed. I've never thought of using bladed spokes for MTB.
In looking at the data of the CX-Ray vs the Laser, the weights for 64x260mm spokes are nearly identical, but the 'Fatigue test / wheel revolutions' and 'Strength on middle section' is 3.5 million and 1600 N/mm2 for the CX-Ray vs 1.25 million and 1500 N/mm2 for the Lasers. Interesting.
