I am building up a SS. I want it to be fairly light. My HH100 is my darling, and I want to get some extra fun out of the singletrack here in NY. What crankset will be "inexpensive" and light? The weights offered on websites vary. Is the Truvativ SS crankset vs. Shimano "ole style" XT a good comparison? I would like to keep the crankset under $200.
less than $200
XT '03 crankset 617g
XT '03 BB 251g
Less than $400
Middleburn RS-8 (alloy) crankset 601g
Ti BB 150g
Less than $600
Stork Power Arms (carbon) crankset 436g
Ti BB 145g
Depending on your budget. The above would be my suggestions. Advantages of carbon cranks is the weight reduction. Disadvantages is that they can chip. Middleburn, I think, offer a lifetime guarantee on their cranks.

I'm building up a light weight 1x1 too and I was planning on using some raceface turbine lp square tapers. They are cheap and you could easily mate one fo the many lightweight square tapered bb's to them. And the great thins is that you can get a set of arms for $80-120ish new on ebay. And, they are light at 430g (I think? - from memory). Oh ya, and they are stiff as heck!
I got a Stylo SS crankset on ebay for $90. It weighs about 560g without the bash guard I believe. I really like that ENO crank though. That will be my next crank after I beat the crap out of the Stylo.
