Thought I was going to have to wait until next year to afford to go disc but I'm getting a lot more money back from the guvment (tax return) than I thought. Now that I don't have to get that extra paper route to save up to buy these bad boys, I'm ready to rock. I'm looking for input from you guys on what to look for in a lightweight wheelset that will also be my everyday wheels.
Here's some things to keep in mind:
Money is an object...I'd like to keep the price below $600.00.
I weigh 170 but ride pretty light.
I want UST rims and have been pleased with the way my Crossmax UST's have sealed with my tubeless setups, maybe Mavic x3.1's ?
Primarily XC rider/racer. No jumping, hucking here.
For about $550 you could have a killer wheelset.....
Chris King ISO hubset
Mavic 3.1 ust rims (or whatever the 2004 # is)
Sapim CX-Ray spokes....you could save some extra $$ here by going with less expensive spokes like DT Supercomps as the Sapim are $$$$.
Alloy nipples
Weight for the set is 1796. Not super light but its a UST wheelset. No tubes needed nor rim strips, etc. They add weight to those that will claim 1400/1500 gram "kit" tubeless wheelsets. Those will always be lighter, but not by a lot.
If you want to go lighter you will need to use something like American Classic disc hubs or DT240's. I'm personally a King fan.

Hmmmm...depends JD. Racing only? Trails too? You could keep your Crossmax for everyday stuff, and then snag a set of prebuilt Stans wheels. They are under your $$ ceiling(barely LOL!), and you'd have THE lightest ust wheelset out there. 175lbs is the suggested limit, and if you use them for race/special occasion only, you'd be fine IMHO.
3.1s in 32 hole config are heavy in my view, at least to what you already have. But, if they are to be your everyday wheels, and are planning to make the xmax your race wheels only, then it'd be fine.
It requires his rimstrip or tape top seal them.
Also there might some issues with them. See attchached pic!
Still waiting to hear from Stan on this one...

I remember from last year, you and I were pretty much on the same wavelength about running UST rims over the home kits? weight differences, duarbility and all.
Just courious if your are still runing the same system or if you jumped ship
I have 2 wheelset currently running King ISO hubs, Mavic 3.1 ust rims, Sapim CX-Ray spokes and alloy nipples. I think I am planning on staying with this setup with the "hopes" that someone will release a UST rim weighing around 475grams or less.

If you use no rimstrip, which I don't(one of the main benefits here), its sorta hard to inflate without a compressor. I take my portable tank to the races, and have a 1.5hp 20gal rig at home. Even then it can be a pain sometimes if the tire is new. But, the only tire I've done so far is the RRs on the 3.1 rim. I may have a custom 24h King drilled so I can use my other 24h front rim to build a superlight ti spoked front 3.1 wheel to go with the other rr. I'm fighting it tho

Thanks for pointing that out Duckman, I didn't realise that a compressor was a must with tubeless rims. I use Eclipse and Stans and can get away with just using my floor pump. The last thing I want to buy is a compressor - All i ever seem to be doing is buying something additonal for the bike particualrly after I say "Its the last thing I gotta buy, honest... I have all I need" and I end up buying stuff.....
I have 2 bikes with the mavic 3.1's and have been on them for over a year now. I've never needed a compressor to get a tire up yet, although it is easier with said compressor. Using a floor pump you have to go pumping mad for a few strokes but they do go up.
BTW I only use UST tires with goop. Dunno how non UST tires would go.
The 3.1 is a strong rim although not particularly light. I bent a few 517's before this but the 3.1 is solid - a good training/gen riding rim. You might want someting a little lighter to race on. One set of each would be nice, no?
with absolutley NO ISSUES! I will keep using UST rims and have been going back to UST tires also for most riding to to ease and reliabilty of UST.
The rims is from a customer that is on this board. This NOT my wheel.
The Eclipse Kits are GREAT but have some minor issues as does Stan's System having Pro and Cons. Personally nothing beats UST rims when it comes to durability and reliabilty when it comes to a "Tubeless"wheelset. Weight is so minimal over Converiosn kits, it's just not worth it
I am going to get some new wheels soon only because I am going to Disc Brakes thanks to Magura (Marta SL) and their sponsorship (coming) of Light-Bikes.com
I with you in hoping to get a lighter UST weight. Mavic can easly shave 100g per rim and make a very good UST rim. It's built on the beefy side to handle low pressure from running tubeless. A lighter rims might not be as strong, but with mnay people running 517s "Tubeless" with no major issues including myself.
Now making a little lighetr UST and selling/marketing it as a Race/XC Only rim can be done. Using UST tires also might help in preventing damage when running lower air pressures. Latex sealed will be fine if used aslo.
If I can run UST rims with UST tires witha 100-150g per wheels reduction would be good enough for me!!!!!
A flor pump will work fine with UST rims or an Eclipse Kits on regular rims.
You can use thier UST kit with the foam strip, but I can inflate tires will a good hand pump with NO problem.
Once you get the tire on and out of the center channel, inflate the tire as best as you can without latex. Most tires will inflate to 20psi. The add your latex. Now with one hand, squeeze the tires and rims together by the valve and pump with one hand. This is where most small leaks happen from. If done right you should get 20-30psi in the tire. Then spin the wheel and tilt it side to side. If you loose a bit of air, your fine. Then inflayte to 40psi let it site over night then you enouy your wheels. Hutchinson and Kenda tires work on the fiorst shot like this. Schwalbe have a 70% success rate with out a compressor.
From time to time I will be able to inflate using a floor pump, but not normally.
I just use CO2's to inflate my tires. I buy a bulk box from KMart for about $15. The smart way to go would be a small compressor, but.......I still just use CO2's.
The weight difference will only be in the rims.
"Standard" rims are about 420 grams plus taping and the rim strip which from memory are about 55 grams each. That brings the rim total w/ strip to about 475 grams. The Mavic UST's will be 510 will all hardware. So apples to apples you are looking at ABOUT a 35 grams difference between the two systems.
Granted you could use 395 gram rims or even some of the new 350 gram rims, but this is an apples to oranges comparison as these rims are definately not as strong and as Dirt Boy pointed out below, have some serious durability issues already.
I really hope someone will produce a sub 475 gram ust rim.

Hey KMan,
I am thinking of relacing my kings to mavic 3.1s or whatever they are called with the Sapim CX-Ray spokes.
Tell me, how hard is it too inflate a normal tyre on these rims over stans system or the euro system.
Also is their a big weight difference between the two setups, that is, std rim wheelset with strips vs UST rims and just latex....
I too haven't had any problems with mounting tires on my ust wheels without a compressor. We have one but i haven't used it to mount any tubeless tires w/stans. As long as you have a good pump i think you should be ok.
For some tires i assume a compressor may be needed... but i haven't ran into one yet
