i got some sun rhynolite XL wheels and the spokes/nipples are recessed so they cant poke at the tube. so its smooth plastic w/ a hole for each nipple. i'm running right now w/ tubes and no rim strip, that ok?

No that is not ok, when you fill the tube with air the tube will try & fill the nipple hole. When you ride the terain pushes in on the tire that pushes the tub deeper into the hole. When going around corners the tire flexes pulling the tube out of the hole. After awhile the tube just goes POOP there you are .
Go buy rim strips, if the tubes have dimples from the holes you should replace them also .
