This is only funny because I just sold a 7 year old Canfield N9 (and most locals know to never buy my used stuff :lol. It took 20 minutes on social media and it was gone. People were lined up for it. :arf:
I shoulda asked more. :cryin:
Top brands:
- the ones I have the best memories with
- the ones I want to create great memories on
Bottom brands:
- the ones I have bad memories on
- the ones that other people keep hyping up, that I judge worse than the ones I like, and would like to not hear more about
IMO, YMMV...
Hard to answer this question, probably because it's a genuinely dumb question. You can ask a question that could be answered with something more concrete, can't you?
+1 on andy f's answer regarding desirability being model dependent.
I dont really care about the brand, was just curious about the perception and value.
I had a second hand Klein Quantum road bike in the past. It was ok and was glad I bought it second hand to save the $$$. Not worth the hype. And it was the bike that I was riding when I got hit.
I always chuckle at people who equate small boutique sized manufacturing with prestige. There definitely is a perception that certain brands are better even when it's not reality. Where I live, Pivot, Ibis, and Santa Cruz are the "it" brands and tend to retain value. But I recently bought a Kona off craigslist for chump change, and Kona makes great bikes. I also rode a Specialized Stumpjumper for over ten years and thought that bike was the balls. Trek and Giant also make very good bikes, but people tend to get less for them second-hand. It's more perception then reality.
People like the idea of the little guy who does it for the love of the sport. But that's often a fantasy. I listened to a podcast with the chief designer at Ibis and apparently she wasn't even a mountain biker when she started designing their bikes. Yet, their bikes are some of the very best around. In the end what matters is how good the product is. All the other stuff is fluffy BS.
I think of Yeti, SC, Ibis, Pivot just to name a few. I had a Niner a few years back and liked it more than the Trek Fuel I replaced it with. It seems in my perception, Niner has taken a dive or no longer appeals to my wants in a bike. They seem like they have been stagnant since they last released the 120mm travel Jet 9 in 2016/17.
Well Niner did file for bankruptcy at that time and Huffy bought them up. I would imagine some changes were made from the quality they were putting out. BTW I live 20 minutes from them.
Prestige generally means something trendy, but not actually that good performance wise despite being priced well above competing products that do work very well.
So, like anything made by apple.
I'm not sure any mountain bike fits that right now. I don't count small custom builders, because you are paying for the "custom" which in itself has value even if the result isn't "the best bike". On the road side you definitely have some brands that make $15000+ bikes just because someone will buy them to collect. I don't see that on the mountain side.

I thought this thread would die or go the route of the thread I linked, but since you people are posting semi relevant stuff I'll pose a question.
Surly: often viewed as a budget/affordable brand by many, no frills, solid, versatile, durable, etc. Those bikes hold their value better than 90% of bikes on the market IMO, maybe more like 95%.
Does this mean Surly bikes are prestigious, if maybe at a different price point?
Dictionary definition: inspiring respect and admiration; having high status.

When I was shopping for a new bike a couple of months ago (I bought my last bike in 1996), I focused my search on Specialized, Trek, and Giant. But what do I know?
(I ended up get a one-owner barely used Specialized Fuse).
Just like everything else in the world, certain brands seem to be more desirable than others.
So just out of curiosity - which brands are considered top and which are considered the bottom.
I don't know most of the brands that are spoken about on these forums. Mountain is different than road. In the past I knew about trek, cannondale, specialized & the italian brands.
There are a ton of brands mentioned here that are new to me.
Workman Bicycles for the acres of shop floor and acres of yard.
