Yep, I lived there as well. As soon as they land on you they bite. There's no human quick enough to flick them off before they bite. The Deer Fly as shown was nasty but the three times larger Horseflies found there will leave a welt the size of a quarter.
Don't confuse that Murder Hornet thing (that happens to be from Japan) with a propper Japanese Hornet. We've had Japanese Hornets in this country for years. They really aren't terribly aggressive or disruptive.
