Mountain Bike Sizing - Is a 21.5" Trek a Way Too Big?

Thank you for this awesome resource!

I'm about to buy my 1st mountain bike from an acquaintance. He's selling a 21.5" Trek X-Caliber 8 for an inexpensive price. However, I'm myself 5'11 with a 32" inseam. I would use the bike for riding in the woods and to and from work - not anything seriously related to mountain biking. What do you think, would this bike be a way too big for me? Does the size matter that much when used for leisure biking?

Thank you - and excuse me for my noobness.

The best way to find out would be to try it, but it sounds too big.

I'm not familiar with that model, but I'm 5'10" and 18" would be comfortable for me. Newer bikes come in M/L/XL etc and mine is a M. Specialized. There is probably a sizing chart on the Trek website that will be helpful.

I just checked, and the sizing chart for trek recommends L. The XL is 21.5.

The best way to know is to try it out.
