I'm getting a quick pop / creak noise coming from the front of my bike during sudden impacts - like boosting off a small rock or landing hard on jumps. If I just push down on the suspension, it doesn't make any noise. I made sure all bolts are tight. I figure the next step is to take off the headset, clean, check for cracks, grease and put back together. But anything I should do before that or anything in particular I should look out for?
Do you have a Fox fork? I had that sound happen on a Fox34 and it turns out that the have a problem sometimes with the uppers where it sound like they are breaking. It’s not a common problem, but it happens enough that Fox replaces mine under warranty without question. If it’s not your headset that may be it.
If you're going to take things far enough apart to work on the headset, take the time to go over the fork with a fine tooth comb as well - clean and check the steer tube and all the junctions at the crown - make sure you don't see any cracks. It's the creaking noise that bothers me. That's usually when I find a crack in something.
If the above advice doesn't work, check your stem and handlebar. To me, your post reads like something is dry. I put a thin film of grease at the stem/steerer. Also clean and slightly grease your stem and handlebar bolts. Finally, don't rule out the creak coming from somewhere else (and it just sounds like the creak is from the front).
Edit: Cotharyus is correct. Looks for cracks first!
Creaking stanchion/steerer in the crown. I had a lyrik do this after a season, thought it was the headset for the longest time.
