So I recently got my hands on a Schwinn High Plains that I am going to build into a single speed dropbar gravel/greenway/singletrack cruiser. It seems like it originally used canti brakes. Would it be a bad idea to use V-brakes instead? How much difference does the actual V-brake make versus the pad and rim?
Edit: I only got the frame with a headset and BB so I don't currently have any brakes.
The only reason to go canti would be if you're trying to do some sort of period-correct VRC build, or already have some and don't have and can't afford V's.
As long as you use V levers, and not the canti levers that came on the bike (if it indeed came with cantis). V brakes need more pull than canti levers can provide. Or get an adapter pulley to make up the difference

Limited to Cane Creek V-levers (or fugly travel agents to mesh v-brakes with drop levers). Absolutely nothing wrong with cantilever brakes, they do a great job. How much trouble to really expect to get in on your singlespeed? Save your ducats for post-ride beverages...

I’ve really never had a problem stopping with cantilevers. Personally I think it’s all in the set up. Plus cantilevers might not stop as well but the modulation is worlds better than a V-brake which is off or on.
everyone says V-brakes stop better, but in my limited experience I don't feel a big difference. And I like the looks of the cantilevers.
