Hi all,
I got a new (for me) bike i'm trying to identify. The decals say Marin, but i'm pretty sure it's not
All the components are in very good shape and consistent with a late 80's production date - Deore II derailleurs, XT shifters, U-II brake, so i believe they were original on the bike
Interesting features
- chainstay mounted U-brake
- magnet doesnt stick to the frame: aluminium? doesnt look titanium to me
- 7 digit serial number on the head tube
The rear drops and stays look steel, in that they they don't look like aluminium. They look like standard steel ends that are slotted into the stays and brazed in place.
The head tube welds don't look like the stack of dimes look you get with properly welded aluminium, and certainly not the neat tight welds you get with ti.
The brake protector and/or kickstand mount hanging off the chainstays is unique. Hopefully someone recognises that feature.
Steel can be non magnetic, I have certainly come across some steel spokes that won’t stick to a magnet.
I’m not a fan of that brake location...braking forces trying to rip the brakes off the bike rather than pushing into the frame. Super interesting frame though, thanks for sharing!

There are plenty of reasons to dislike the brake and location. But in particular, how are the forces there any worse than a front brake? The forces on the front are trying to rip it off to?
From my chair, only having the info provided here, and not knowing much of Marins history?
All adds up to an experimental material attempt. Think, magnesium, or boron. Both would have thickish welds like that.
Seat binder? Looks like they designed something to allow the material to not be pinched, as though that amount of constant tension and release would cause failure?
Rear end, not being magnetic, and small diameter as it is, beats the hell out of me.
Maybe not even a Marin, but someone got a sticker kit and tossed it on?
My next guess based on the birdsh*t welds was going to be someone rebadged a older Murray or something....
