This feels like a stupid question. I'm converting a bike to a single speed, one which will require a chain tensioner. When I sized the chain, I could tell it was possibly going to be short. So I cut it anyway, and I was right, it's only a couple millimeters to short to be able to add the missing link correctly. So I ended up installing the chain with the wheel off, so there would be enough slack in the chain, and then putting the wheel in. The chain is loose enough that I'll be installing the tensioner.
My question is, which length should I run? Keep doing what I did (remove wheel with chain) or should the chain be one link longer in order to use the missing link with the wheel on? Is there a trick/technique I'm missing?
