There is not much action on the what's it worth section so I hope I can ask here. I'm a roadie on mostly vintage and casually looking for a MTB. This one popped up and I think it is complete SunTour XC Comp but for the pedals. My road bikes have 57cm top tubes. Would this one be about right? And I've gone from having one vintage road bike to five, but if let's say that I will only have one MTB-- would this be a good one or should I wait? (There are no better pics)Thanks.
I would think a few hundred max IMO. 26in bikes aren't getting much love these days. It would be a fun bike to cruise around on but if this is your only mountain bike, I personally would pass on it and get something a bit newer.
It also depends on the kind of riding you do. To me, mountain biking means riding a bicycle on trails that I would otherwise be hiking on. And both my wheels are touching the ground almost 100% of the time. A bike like this would be fine for that. Although I am not trying to deny the advancement in tech/geo as compared to a modern bike.
I would also say that it's not a bad idea to spend as little as possible on your first mountain bike just to see if you even like it or not. I don't think your first experience will be so diminished using a vintage mtb as opposed to a modern one as to turn you off. It's a cheap way to get started. And if you like it, you can always get something else. N+1...
Thanks for the replys. I once had a Rockhopper to ride with the kids and we all did a couple XC races before they started running in school so I get some of it. I'm also a bit of a retro grouch and a steel, rigid, MTB is what I am interested in. I can now afford an Expert level bike from 30 years ago and if this was something special and I could "honestly" tell my wife that this bike is easily worth twice what I paid, then I might suffer the ridicule earned from a 2 hour drive to pick it up.
