Have a 95ish trek 870 that I would like to convert to a single speed. Where do I start? (Dumb Question?)

Determine what gear you need.
This depends on the terrain you ride and how strong you are.

If the bike is still fully functional with gears, I'd try to ride your terrain not shifting to see what's best for you.

After that:
Remove front & rear derrailer, chain, shifters and shiftcables.
Then put on new cog, chainring, chain and chain tensioner.

That should do it.

Edit: sorry, forgot you also need a spacer set for the cog

This basically sums it up. If you have a standard crankset with replacable rings, you can convert it to a single chainring.

Wolftooth is a good place to start. They aren't the cheapest but make very high quality chainrings and SS cogs.

There's a few options for chain tensioners. Check out reviews but most of them work well.
