    Fork Oil Questions

Couple of Questions for y'all regarding open bath forks:

    1) What are the different fork oil weights & what difference do they make in the action of the fork? (I'm riding a '99 BAM if it matters)

    2) What do you do with the used oil?

    Thanks,

    Zizzle

    Fork oil answers

I'm assuming that a '99 BAM, you're referring to a marzocchi, correct? If so, 'zocchi usually uses 7.5 weight oil.

Common oil weights are 5, 7.5 or 10. You can buy a quart (which will last you a loong time) from a motorcycle shop for under $10.

The higher # the oil, the slower it makes the action on your shock (compression and/or rebound).

Some folks will go to a lower weight oil in the winter because when the temps drop, the oil will become more viscous and will slow the fork down a little. Then, they throw in a higher weight when the temps warm up to slow it down a bit. I, on the other hand, don't really notice it that much and don't bother.

Dispensing your oil.....take it to the same type of place that you'd take car oil. Look for hazardous waste drop spots.

    Hope that helps,
    EB

FYI: go to your local motorcycle shop to buy fork oil. It will be much cheaper. At a lbs here 8oz of fork oil is $9.90 while 32oz at the motorcycle shop is $6!

    Disposing of oil

I'm pretty fortunate b/c our recycling / trash people take motor oil and fork oil in milk jugs. But, if you don't have that, then I know that any place that sells motor oil usually has recycling.
