'03 Black Comp or '04 MX 100 Comp?

Looking at 2 shocks for upgrade:
    1) 2003 Manitou Black Comp Fork 80/100mm (w/brake bosses) for $270.00
    2) 2004 Marzocchi MX Comp 100 Air for $200.00.

Looks like these 2 shocks are the best values in my price range - any opinions? Is the Manitou Black Comp worth $70 more? I wish Greenfish Adventures had the Black Elite 80/100 w/brake bosses for $200. I would prefer to save money so if there is no huge difference in these 2 shocks I would prefer the cheaper, but don't want to regret purchase later. I mainly ride cross country with rolling hills, roots, log crossings, gullies, etc. Any other shock recomendations in my price range would also be appreciated. What is a reasonable charge for an LBS to install a shock?

I had an 03 Manitou Black Comp 100/120 on my Jamis Dakar and it worked great for me. I'd compress it down to the 100mm setting for climbing, and it still had some bump sensitivity. When in the 120mm mode, it was pretty plush. I didnt have any problems with it at all.

I just took off an 03 Marzocchi MX Comp 100mm, one side air/one side coil, and replaced it with an 03 Marzocchi Z1 FR. HUUUUUUUGE difference, like butter. But back to your question. The MX Comp was a little more stiff and rigid feeling compared to my Manitou (which was full coil). On my MX Comp, I ran the air pressure a tad lower than recommended to make it a little bit softer.

I think the biggest difference is the obvious, one is an air fork, and one is coil. Generally speaking, coil forks smooth out the small stuff better than the air, (at least from my experience they do.)

Check out www.richardscycles.com or www.richardsbicycles.com (I forget which one is correct), he has some killer deals on forks too, that is where i picked up my Z1 FR for a killer price!

2003 Black Elite (with tpc+ damping - much better than the damping in the black comp) is $199 at www.greenfishsports.com.

[edit: I see you need the brake bosses...... A lot of other (online) places (are/were) selling the black elite for $230. Just make sure you get the one with TPC+ - some of the black elites came with TPC not the (+).
