Running XTR 11 Speed with a 10 Speed Derailleur?

I know some stuff is backwards compatible, and I was just wondering if there was chance chance this might be? I have an XTR M9000 11-40 cassette and M9000 XTR 11s shifter on the way to me. Any chance the pull on the shifter can make my 10s shadow+ rear derailleur shift proper on the 11s drivetrain? I havent ordered the rear derailleur yet, just wondering if I could save some $$. Any know, or has anyone tried?

Got all the parts this week, broke down and bought the xtr derailleur too, but I'm gonna try it with my slx shadow + 10 speed to see if it works, I'll let you know.

I'm curious...what did you find out? I assume the spring pull reasons are different...

    Any info on this....?
Also wondering if the new M8000 rear derailleur will work for 10 speed cassette/shifter? Since the shifter does all the indexing anyways. Plan to upgrade to full M8000 shortly but need a derailleur asap and don't want to buy another 10 spd just to buy again for the 11spd

I was also curious about this, but on the SRAM end of things for shifting. I currently have an X9 Type 2 10-speed derailleur and would like to pair it with an X1 11-speed shifter and XT 11-42 11-speed cassette.

I *know* that the X9 RD can handle the 11-42 range, as I currently have that with an extended cog on my 10-speed setup, but I'm really curious if the indexing and shifting angle of the RD will match up with the 11-speed XT cassette.

Worst case I'd get a GX 11-speed RD for a proper 1x setup, but really curious if this might work...

I ran an m9000 rear der with Saint shifters and a 10 speed XT cassette with a 42t extender... Shifts better than a 10-speed der with a RadCage...

So yes, it should work with M8000 as well...

Although the old RD has he same lateral range it's the height difference between the 11-tooth and the 40/42-tooth that causes a problem. The new 11 speed RD has been redesigned to handle this.
