I've owned both, and the current version's geometry and suspension design are significant improvements.

Both versions climb really well, but the new version does everything else a little better. It actually handles and descends a lot better. More controlled and more fun.

Yeah had earlier version, green/black stays. Intrigued by split pivot and the Bike Bible review is what spurred the inquiry. Looking for something with the XC/aggressive trail capabilities. Problem is their review was the carbon version, my budget would be alloy with an upgrade to carbon wheels at some point.

I too have been wondering about this
I have a '13 Spearfish 1 that I like a lot. A friend has a 14, the split pivot, that he does not like and is looking to sell the frame and fork. I have ridden the newer one and was impressed. Of course I may be influenced by the various media stories from 2014 stating the new Spearfish and Horsethief were so freaking amazing compared to the older design. I do find the idea of a more active and isolated rear suspension attractive as well as the shorter chain-stays.

I have to 2014, so far a good dozen rides on it, solid machine. I didn't have the 1st version but did have 2011 giant anthem, which was probably very close. Loved the anthem as well but steep head angle, super long chainstays kept the front end glued down. 2014 fish is the anthem with a more playful feel.
