    Spearfish bottom bracket height

So the only negative thing I keep reading about in the reviews of this bike is the uber low bottom bracket. Some even say its the one thing that keeps them from buying it.

I know it has a 45mm drop, but what is the measured height, for a large frame, anyone know??

How low is it really when compared. Its hard to tell looking at geometry charts, but it looks to be the same height as say a Superfly 100 29er, or a Giant Anthem X 29er... and why don't you see much complaints on their low bottom brackets.

From what I've gathered, a Giant Anthem X 29er, large frame, has a measured BB height of 12.8 inches, assuming 2.2ish tires etc. A specialized Epic 29 large is 13.1 inches.

Any comments on this in general?

This frame looks ideal to me, but I am concerned about the low BB, my riding is a local colorado front range, pretty rocky!

Put a 120mm in front. It still rides great that way, especially in rocky terrain, and it'll raise the bb by 1/2". 1/3" after sag. Voids warranty, but I'm not worried. The front end is stout.

I have no idea what the actual height is but I do know that I hit more stuff with it than my other bikes.. My chainring has hit, and the bottom of my pedals has also hit some stuff. The truth is it doesn't affect my riding that much and I only hit my BB once in a while. It shouldn't keep you from buying the Spearfish because it is freaking awesome!

I don't get the complaint when comparing the SF to similar bikes. Most bikes in this category have relatively low BB's.
I live in phoenix and have been riding an SF for a month or our rocky trails and (coming from a HT, XC bike) and love it. I don't avoid technical areas at all either.

I'd also like to know the actual "BB to ground" measurement. BB drop is definitely the biggest complaint I've heard on the Spearfish, with longer chainstays being the only other potential issue ... otherwise everyone I know riding one loves the bike! I currently ride a Jet9 (medium) and it measures 13 3/8" from ground to the center of BB. Of course the lower suspension link sits below the BB so actual ground clearance is less.

Can one of you Spearfish owners get us an accurate BB to ground measurement?

    Thanks!

I ended up getting the spearfish and I'll measure the bb drop on mine for u when I can (it'll be a few days until I get home)... but as a post above says... its not really that low.. at least not lower than similar bikes like the anthem, xtc and others. I'm riding in local rocky **** out here in Colorado and don't think twice about it... the bike is a great ride. I'm not sure how the spearfish got this stigma about its bb. At least in retrospect for me its a non issue.

i have an '11 SF, and with 2.1 tires and the fork to 120mm, its 12" from the ground to the bottom of the BB shell. Only 3/4" lower than my Kona Satori with 2.3 tires and a 140 fork.
Personally I have never found the BB height of the Salsa to be an issue, even here in CT where its rocky and rooty.

Thanks for the info! My Jet 9 has 100mm shock with 2.2 tires and has 12 1/2" clearance from floor to bottom of BB shell, so not as much difference as I thought there might be. That said I rode trails yesterday with lots of off-camber sections and had several pedal strikes on the high side of the trail ... so I suppose every bit of clearance helps!

I have ridden my Spearfish all over Phoenix, AZ, and now all over the even rockier PA. So far no issues at all.

Sure I hit it at times, but no more than any other bike I have ever had.

I don't even see this as a negative, but even if it was, the pros of this bike far outweigh it.

Just measured my Spearfish BB ...

Note mine is currently set up with 2.1" Maxxis Ignitors @ 30psi, and I have a Reba set at 120mm w/ a bit extra sag.

My BB measures exactly 12-14/16 inches, or 32.7cm, so just shy of 13" measured from floor to the center crank spindle / BB.

    Hope that helps.
