Spearfish 1x10: chain retention and chainring selection

Thinking of converting my stock SF1 drivetrain to 1x10x using an MRP bling ring with the stock X9 cranks, and the stock cassette.

    I'm wondering about two things:

    1) suggested devices for light and effective chain retention up front.
    2) suggested chainring size for good general purpose gearing.

I don't think a chain retention device is necessary. I used an eno ss crank (1x9) on a jet 9 I had w no chain drop issues. Just make sure your chain isn't excessively loose. A 32t x 11/36 will give you a nice range of gearing. An xx1 crank w a 32t would probably be ideal over converting your x9 crank. You'd get a better chain line and taller teeth on the chain ring.

I have the stock build SF1 and put a bling ring on the front and use the Bionicon lower guide
with nothing on top and its been flawless for a few months now .

I'll be interested in reading about what you decide to go with and how it turns out. I might be interested in persuing this option on my new SF1. Your "Superfish" report was very helpful in my purchase decision.
I think a 30T chain ring would best cover my riding area's.
