Softtail alternatives to Dos Niner, Moots?

    Fellow 29ers,

I'm curious if there are any softtail alternatives to the current Dos Niner and Moots versions. While I currently ride a rigid and geared Karate Monkey, I find that my riding style puts me smack in the middle of a full-on hardtail (no thudbuster) and a full suspension bike. I,m a realtively big guy, 6'3" 195lbs, and enjoy XC riding/training/racing. Mild technical is ok, but I much prefer cranking out miles. As such, I think a 29er softail would be perfect for me and I just want to be sure that I fully research all the options before shelling out $ on a new frame (will keep the Karate Monkey of course, perhaps turn it back into a singlespeed).

I have seen the Dos Niner advertised at a sale price on Speedgoat, but remain concerned about the rear tire clearance issues I've read. I could wait until the 2006 version is released, but am not entirely convinced that I want to pay ~$1100 for it. The Moots is also a nice bike, but super pricey. Is there anything else out there that I should be considering? Or, should I simply beef up my Karate Monkey by using bigger tires, a supsension fork, and thudbuster (heaven forbid)?

Suggestions, experiences, and advice is welcome. Thanks.

    DirtPilot out.

Dean builds a 29" softail in Ti. About half way between the cost of the other two.
You could order one today and it may come in before the 07 Salsa is available.

    Other Softails

Check out the curtlo bike site. curtlo makes a softail that looks so sweet and the prices are great. like $1200 for frame and fork combo. Also check out the khs bike site. they have a softail setup pretty reasonable. have fun!!!

I"ll 2nd that curtlo suggestion. I can throw some other options your way, but they are all as expensive or more than the Moots. Like the Ibis Silk Ti 29er at 3500 frame only.

Just get a FS banger and "get ''er done," we say in Arkansas.

Don’t let all of the haters keep you away from the Thudbuster. They have a 1” version that would be just enough to take the sting out. Worth a try………

Top choices, depending on your wallet and intended usage, in no particular order:
*Fisher Sugars - 2004 and up
    *Van Dessel Buzz Bomb FS
*Asylum/Titus Racer X (or same bike from various custom manufacturers)
    *Lenz Leviathan
    *Lenz Bohemoth
    *Ventana El Capitain

    Wanna see one

Wait about 1 more week, and Doug over at Curtlo will be done with my 29er Soft Tail, and I'll have pics for you, and not long after a ride report. It's an XXL, and Doug says he can easily build them in most sizes, except smalls. The biggest bonus, besides the fact that it's custom sized, Tru Temper steel, custom color, etc......it's over $300 cheaper than a new Dos frame! Doug's wait time was only 2 months, and he's fanatical about rider fit.

    patiently waiting.......
    GET Bret Weir, I said.

I won't weigh in with my opinion because I'm obviously biased...but 07 Salsa? 2007? Hopefully, this was a typo because, we'll have something in early 2006.

    Thanks again all!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate all your suggestions and advice. This board is fantastic, and continually keeps my 29er passion alive. Recent life events (newborn child and the family unit shrinking down to one income) will probably drive my decision for me, but it's nice to weigh all the options.

Going for a ride this afternoon on my KM, I can't wait to simply get out in the dirt and turn the cranks.

    DirtPilot out.
